Big Island Running Company will offer a free 16-week training program for the Honolulu Marathon.
An introductory meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Big Island Running Company store on Alii Drive.
Running schedules will be tailored to an individual’s current fitness and training goals. Runs will be scheduled to coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and long runs at 6:30 a.m. Saturdays.

Kalakaua Basketball clinic in Honokaa
Coach Dennis Agena of Kalakaua Basketball and his staff will conduct a youth basketball clinic Aug. 23-25 at the Honokaa County Gym.
Agena runs the Kalakaua Clinic on Oahu and has developed several standout players over the years, including Derrick Low.
Children ages 6-18 may participate. Sponsored by the Hamakua Athletic Association, the clinic will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Times may vary.
Players need to bring a basketball, basketball shoes, water and proper playing attire. The registration fee is $60. Registration and waiver forms are available at Parks and Recreation offices, Ted’s Garage in Honokaa and Sports Line in Hilo.

Registration for the league will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Wednesday at the Waimea Community Center. Players ages 5-8 may register, and the registration fee is $10.
Basketball clinics will take place until Wednesday at the Thelma Parker Memorial Gym from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for ages 5-to-6 and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 7-to-8.

The West Hawaii Aikido club is accepting new members interested in practicing the martial art of aikido.

Macadamia Nut tournament Aug. 25 in Hamakua
The Macadamia Nut Tournament, which features latex-coated macadamia nuts instead of traditional golf balls, will take place at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 25 at Hamakua Country Club. Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m., and an entry fee of $40 includes lunch and prizes. Organizers will use a Callaway scoring system. Youth 3-on-3 basketball league in Kona The department of Parks and Recreation Kona district will hold a 3-on-3 basketball league for 5-to 8-year-olds. League play is scheduled from Sept. 9 to 30 starting at 4:40 p.m.
Register by Aug. 28 at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium at the Old Kona Airport Park.
The league is also looking for encourging, volunteer coaches.

Kupuna softball league begins Sept. 8
The Kupuna fall slow pitch softball league will begin Sept. 8. Games will be played every Sunday morning through Nov. 17.
One nine inning game is played and the league is open to all men and women 50 and older..

Waiakea Volleyball Invitational
The inaugural Waiakea High School Girls Volleyball Invitational is planned Thursday through Saturday at the Warrior Gym.
The tournament beings at 3:30 p.m. Thursday with a seedings pool. On Friday action begins at 1 p.m. with the teams advancing into power pools, based on win/loss records.
On Saturday, play starts at 9:30 a.m. and the teams will move into a gold or silver elimination bracket. The top six teams from Friday battle in the gold bracket and bottom six in the silver bracket.
Participating teams include Waiakea Blue, Waiakea White, Kamehameha, Honokaa, Kealakehe, Hawaii Prep, Pahoa, Ka‘u, East Pac, Konawaena, Keaau and Hilo. East Pac is a combination squad from St. Joseph and Christian Liberty.
Admission is $3 for adults, $2 senior citizens and $1 for students.
No outside food or beverage will be allowed.
