Police arrested 25 motorists for alleged drunken driving July 29 through Saturday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21. So far this year, there have been 730 DUI arrests compared with 813 during the same period last year, a 10.2 percent decrease.
There have been 804 major accidents so far this year compared with 872 during the same period last year, a 7.8 percent decrease. So far this year, there were 19 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 23 during the same period last year, a 17.4 percent decrease. To date, three fatalities were related to drugs only, one was related to alcohol only and four were related to a combination of both. DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.

Police seek to
identify man
Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man wanted for using a stolen credit card.
The man used the stolen card June 26 to purchase two flat-screen televisions at a store in Kailua-Kona. He was seen driving away in what appeared to be a red four-door sports utility vehicle.
Police ask anyone who recognizes the man in the photo to call Lieutenant Gerald Wike at 326-4646, ext. 266, or the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
Tipsters who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Scoreboard funded by former councilman
Money for a scoreboard at the West Hawaii hockey rink was provided by Hawaii County, using former Councilman Curtis Tyler’s discretionary fund. An article in Saturday’s edition gave an incorrect source of that funding.
