Stretching exercises today at Tutu’s House
Susan Nowell, director of rehabilitation services for North Hawaii Community Hospital, will present “Foam Roller Exercises 101,” from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Tutu’s House in Waimea. Nowell will demonstrate simple stretching exercises that can be done using these inexpensive therapeutic tools. Participants will learn ways to reduce muscle soreness, prevent injury, relieve stress, speed recovery and increase postural awareness and balance.
Programs at Tutu’s House are free; tax-deductible donations are welcome.
Kohala Center offers farmer training
The Kohala Center is accepting applications for Ku I Ka Mana, a beginning farmer-rancher training program it administers.
The 18-week course begins Aug. 2. Classes are conducted Friday evenings at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center and Saturday mornings at Ka Hua Aina, The Kohala Center’s farm training site. The program seeks to recruit, train, and support at least 40 new farmers over the next two years. Those who complete the training program and create viable farm and business plans will be able to work with the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture to execute short-term leases on farmlands managed by the Hamakua Agricultural Co-op, County of Hawaii, and Kapulena Agricultural Park.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers the following free events. Programs are co-sponsored by the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association; a $2 donation helps support park programs. Park entrance fees may apply.
Haunani’s Aloha Expressions, a hula group comprised of Native Hawaiian kane and wahine kupuna, ranging from 70 to more than 90 years old, will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. The performers have shared the aloha spirit by welcoming malihini arriving at the Port of Hilo and at Hilo International Airport.
The kupuna also entertain patients at the Life Care Center of Hilo, Hale Anuenue, Extended Care, Hawaii Island Adult Day Care and Aunty Sally Kaleohano Luau House Senior Program. Group members make their own costumes and lei and have performed at the park’s annual cultural festival.
Doug Connors, treasurer for the Laupahoehoe Train Museum, will share the history of the Hawaii Consolidated Railway – the only standard gauge train in the islands, the impact of the 1946 tsunami, and the development of the train museum which started in 1995. Connors will also speak about sugar plantations and the development of the Hamakua Coast. The presentation is slated from 7 to 8 p.m. July 30 at the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
DLNR to address
jet packs Thursday
on Oahu
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold a public information meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the DLNR Board Room 132, 1151 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu, to discuss plans and possible state rules for modified water propulsion jet packs.
DLNR is inviting the U.S. Coast Guard and interested members of the public, including ocean users and current jet pack operators, to meet and discuss usage issues, safety concerns, classification and possible regulation of these devices. Water propulsion jet packs consists of a boat unit that delivers pressurized water to an airborne flight unit worn on the user’s back. The boat unit can be manned or unmanned. Operators “fly” up to 30 feet above the water and travel at speeds of 32 mph.
Coffee conference scheduled on Kauai
The 18th annual Hawaii Coffee Association Conference is slated Thursday to Saturday at the Kauai Beach Resort. Offering a full lineup of activities, the event, which is open to the public, attracts coffee growers, processors, roasters, wholesalers and retailers.
The conference includes workshops on green grading, label compliance and eradication of the coffee berry borer. Legislative updates and reports from the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, the Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center and the Synergistic Hawaii Agriculture Council are also scheduled.
Other activities feature an expo, silent auction, election of HCA officers, tour of Kauai Coffee Company and networking reception.
