North Hawaii’s quest to win a state title fell a game short Monday at Oahu’s Hans L’Orange Field as Central Maui defeated the Big Island team 14-7 and 18-6 to win the Junior League state tournament.
North Hawaii entered the final day of the ages 13-14 double-elimination tourney undefeated, having beaten Central Maui 8-3 on Friday. Central Maui needed two consecutive to claim Hawaii’s lone berth in the West Regional tournament, and they did just that. The regional tournament takes place Aug. 2-7 in Vancouver, Wash.
In Game 1, Phillip Grace led the North Hawaii offense, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Finn Richmond and Kilipaki Akau each had a single, and Jonah Hurney scored two runs.
Kaulana Look, who pitched the first inning for North Hawaii, took the loss.
In Game 2, Grace and Richmond both went 3-for-3, with Richmond and Caden Perreira-Lau scoring two runs apiece.
Starting pitcher Dawson Abiley suffered the loss.
