NEWPORT, R.I. — Two-time defending champ John Isner defeated fellow American Ryan Harrison 7-6 (0), 6-2 on Monday in the opening round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
In the most interesting match of the day, Poland’s Michal Przysiezny beat 15-year old American Stefan Kozlov, who was making his ATP debut, 6-3, 6-7 (9), 6-4 in a match that lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours.
In other first-round play, Ante Pavic of Croatia defeated Australian John-Patrick Smith 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3); Adrien Bossel of Switzerland ousted Canadian Erik Chvojka 2-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4; American Alex Kuznetsov rallied to beat Farrukh Dustov of Uzbekistan 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-2; Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic beat Ilija Bozoljac of Serbia 6-7 (14), 7-5, 6-2.
France’s Adrian Mannarino beat American James Blake 6-4, 5-7, 6-1; and Japan’s Yuichi Sugita got by Canadian Jesse Levine 7-5, 7-5.
Top-seeded Errani routs Cohen
in Palermo opener
PALERMO, Sicily — Top-seeded Sara Errani bounced back from her first-round upset at Wimbledon by routing 141st-ranked American Julia Cohen 6-0, 6-1 in the Italiacom Open on Monday.
It was a welcome return to red clay courts for Errani, last year’s French Open runner-up, after losing to Puerto Rican teenager Monica Puig at the All England Club.
In Monday’s only other main-draw matches, seventh-seeded Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain held off Mathilde Johansson of France 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, and Italian wild card Corinna Dentoni rallied past Carolina Garcia of France 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Klizan advances to Stuttgart 2nd round
STUTTGART, Germany — Eighth-seeded Martin Klizan of Slovakia beat Albert Montanes of Spain 6-2, 6-3 on Monday to reach the second round of the Mercedes Cup.
Klizan didn’t drop serve to win in 76 minutes and set up a meeting with another Spaniard, Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated Tobias Kamke of Germany 6-3, 7-6 (4). Michael Berrer, a 153rd-ranked German who received a wild card into the tournament, beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Top-seeded Tommy Haas, the local favorite, has a bye into the second round.
Halep, Beck, Larsson advance in Hungary
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania won the last nine games to beat Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Monday.
Fourth-seeded Annika Beck of Germany defeated Tadeja Majeric of Slovenia 6-1, 6-2. In the second set, Majeric broke to take a 2-0 lead, but Beck then won six consecutive games at the Romai Tennis Academy.
Johanna Larsson of Sweden, seeded fifth, beat Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena 6-2, 7-5. Spain’s Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor defeated Nina Bratchikova of Russia 6-1, 7-5.
