Gehrig Octavio and Trayden Tamiya each drove in two runs, and Makoa Andres hurled a four-hitter to lead the Hilo All-Stars to a 6-4 win over Makakilo-Kapolei in their opening game of the state PONY baseball tournament Saturday.
The eight-team event for players ages 13-14 is being played at Iron Maehara Stadium in Kahului, Maui. It runs through Tuesday with the champion advancing to the West Zone tournament later this month in Whittier, Calif.
In other action Saturday involving a Big Island team, Mililani beat Kona 8-3. Hilo (1-0) will play Mililani (1-0) at 10 a.m. today in the winner’s bracket.
Octavio went 2-for-3 with a single and a triple to lead Hilo’s five-hit attack. Daylen Calicdan added a double and an RBI while Tamiya had a two-run single.
No one paired hits for the Oahu squad.
Andres went the seven-inning distance to earn the win. He struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter.
“Makoa was very efficient today,” Hilo coach Eric Kurosawa said.

Hilo erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to grab control. Then after Makakilo-Kapolei plated three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to close to within 5-4, the Big Islanders added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-4.
“We’re just trying to win one game at a time,” Kurosawa said. “There are a bunch of really good teams in the tournament, and we don’t want to look too far ahead. Today, we beat a good team in Makakilo-Kapolei.”
Besides Hilo, Kona, Mililani and Makakilo-Kapolei, the other teams in the tournament are Maui Red, Maui Blue, Windward and Kauai. The tourney opened Friday with Windward beating Maui Red 16-11 and Maui Blue topping Kauai 13-3.

The Nobu Yamauchi All-Stars added two more wins at the Stephen Janvrin Memorial Baseball Tournament on Saturday, beating Green Valley White 15-8 host Durango 9-3.
The eight-team event for players ages 15 and under wraps up today at the Durango High School Field in Las Vegas.
The Big Islanders finish off the tournament today with a game against Rancho, before traveling to play in the RBI Regional Tournament starting Friday in Anaheim, Calif.
Hilo opened the tournament Thursday with a 15-1 win over Bishop Gorman Orange, then beat San Clemente, Calif., 6-3 in the first game Friday. Green Valley Blue stopped the Big Islanders’ win streak later in the day, defeating Hilo 11-3.
The Big Islanders then routed Green Valley White on Saturday in their first game. Noah Chow went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead a 13-hit attack. Royce Nuniez had two hits and three RBIs, Kelii Montibon had two hits and two RBIs, and Joey Ongais added two hits.
Makana Aiona was one of four Hilo pitchers to take the mound. He earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Chow was the final pitcher, following Aiona, and he struck out three in 1 2/3 innings of stellar relief.
