Library hosting movie and costume party
The Friday Night Crew youth group invites fans of Johnny Depp and “Dark Shadows” to dress in their finest “vamp-attire” and join it for a movie night and costume party from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at Thelma Parker Memorial Library in Waimea.
Directed by Tim Burton, “Dark Shadows” (PG-13) stars Michelle Pfieffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp as the romantic vampire Barnabus Collins. In the new movie version of the classic TV hit, Barnabus returns to Collinwood Manor to find dysfunctional descendants in dire need of his protection.
The event is a fundraiser for Friday Night Crew members’ upcoming travel to Austin, Texas, for Community Anti-drug Coalitions of America midyear training program from July 21 to 25. Because the Friday Night Crew has been actively engaged in prevention work, to reduce underage drinking and drug use, it has already put previous years’ CADCA training into action in the community.
Its efforts helped bring Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana) forum to Waimea in March with Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Dr. Kevin Sabet, former White House drug policy adviser. At the encouragement of Project SAM organizers, the Friday Night Crew will help make a presentation about Hawaii’s Project SAM to the CADCA assembly during the conference.
One youth member, Matt Horne of Waimea, has received a full scholarship from CADCA, and fundraising work is under way to assist Horne with travel expenses, and to support additional youth participants and chaperones.

Road, picnic area closure at Kaloko-Honokohau park
Work along Kaloko Road and coconut tree trimming will warrant the closure of the Kaloko gravel road, Ala Nui Kaloko, off Highway 19 between mile markers 96 and 97 and access to Kaloko Pond Coastal Picnic area between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday. This area of Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park will be closed until work is completed.

New Hope Waimea movie night is Friday
Keiki of all ages are invited to a presentation of “Horton Hears a Who” slated for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Church Row Park in Waimea. Bring folding chairs, blankets and dinner. Free popcorn, bottled water and hot cocoa will be served.
In the event of inclement weather, the movie will be screened inside the New Hope Waimea sanctuary.

Ranan completes
basic military training
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Malbert N. Ranan has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Ranan, son of Maria Ranan of Keaau, is a 2011 graduate of Pahoa High and Intermediate School.
Dryland forest
work completed
Na Kahumoku members and IHS employees joined forces to advance the Kaupulehu dryland forest recovery efforts through the removal of non-native plants. In addition to hosting numerous endangered and threatened plants and animals, dryland forests show us how we can preserve our soils; produce food, fiber and fuel; and preserve our water shed in the face of increasing desertification worldwide due to rising global temperatures.
Na Kahumoku, a project of the nonprofit Friends of the Future (fofhawaii.org), is an environmental and cultural youth leadership program with a focus on environmental education in the context of place, cultur, and service. Kaupulehu is one of the places where Na Kahumoku serves and learns. Both an extra curricular and co-curricular program, Na Kahumoku currently exists as a class called Polynesian Culture Club at Kealakehe Intermediate School, and as an after-school program with additional weekend and holiday programming.
