The Living Arts Gallery presents a special June show by fiber artist Susan O’Malley. The show is a culmination of her past works in handmade paper, and new works in a three-dimensional format. O’Malley uses natural plant materials she harvests here to create unique and truly native-to-Hawaii art.
O’Malley has been an artist and educator for years, embracing the ethnobotany of Hawaii and its Pacific Rim influences. In the 1970s, her materials of choice were naturally dyed yarns and wools. Then she experimented with hand-built ceramics, batik and felt sculptures. In the early ’90s, her interest in handmade paper and dyes developed under the guidance of Marilyn Wold, Betty Oliver and Mina Takahashi. Her paper art has evolved from large-scale screens to 3-D sculptures under glass and mobile creations.
O’Malley will be featured all month at The Living Arts Gallery, 55-3435 Akoni Pule Highway, Hawi. Visitors may meet the artist anytime June 11 or attend a talk story presentation with O’Malley from 3 to 7 p.m. June 22. The gallery is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Contact the gallery at 889-0739 or visit livingartsgallery.net for more information.
