Innovations Public Charter School’s Fine Arts Mentorship Experience students recently produced Disney’s “Alice In Wonderland Jr.” at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. Students developed the program from design to presentation with mentorship in each of the main theater elements: drama, music, set and stage design, costuming and choreography.
With colorful and whimsical costumes, three sizes of Alices played by students Ariana Kaneshiro at small Alice, Sienna Levine as tall Alice and Juliana Hennig as medium Alice chase the White Rabbit, played by Sarah Chang, down a rabbit hole and into a strange world that got curiouser and curiouser. She conversed with a talking doorknob, played by Emmaline Geldhof, danced with a Dodo bird, played by Will Wong, debated manners with Tweedles, played by Ocean Donaldson-Sargis, attended a tea party and found herself face-to-face with an obnoxious queen, played by Tia Amafala. Through her experiences, Alice discovered some important things about herself.
Characters engaged the audience with backgrounds of brightly painted and cheerful designs that set the stage for Alice’s wild adventure through Wonderland. Developing this full-stage production provided students the opportunity to learn about the complex composition of theatrical productions and experience the joy of bringing a story to life through drama and music.
