Art hikes planned in search of palila
The Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project, in conjunction with the Hawaii Nei Art Contest, is sponsoring palila art hike and seed collection days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19 and June 22 on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Hikers will meet with the project’s Volunteer Coordinator Jackson Bauer at the Mauna Kea State Park off Saddle Road, then search for palila in their native mamane, naio high-elevation forest. The group will also collect seeds to be used in restoring the fragile habitat. The public is invited, particularly Big Island artists.
