Legislate their use
On April 17, my cousin’s 16-year-old son was killed in a skateboarding accident on Oahu.
If Reid had been wearing a helmet, he would be with us today.
I would like a positive to arise out of this family tragedy. I appeal to our state representatives and senators to please reintroduce and pass legislation requiring helmets for skateboarders under the age of 18.
Our keiki need the protection. The attitude of “boys will be boys” or “helmets are not cool” can result in the tragedy that our family is experiencing. It only takes one fall on an unprotected head to snuff out a life.
I am an avid cyclist and 28-time Ironman finisher. I always wear a helmet. Helmets are cool.
Our keiki deserve no less.

Complaints ahead
Stop wasting money on the Kona airport remodel.
Aircraft takeoff and landing routes go over the Pine Trees area and the new Kohanaiki development community.
It is just a matter of time before the rich folks living there complain about the aircraft noise. And what we have seen so far with taking over more and more of the Pine Trees area is that they bully their way.
The good folks who enjoy this park now have never complained about aircraft noise.
Maybe we should concentrate on the Hilo airport, where there are no rich people to complain.

Mahalo to students
Big mahalo to the 31 Hawaii Preparatory Academy seventh graders and their teachers who helped celebrate Earth Day on the Waimea Trail: Ke Ala Kahawai O Waimea.
Along with Waimea Trails and Greenways committee members, students cleared a tree that had recently fallen on the trail, making it impassable. The energetic group also spread wood chips to replenish the trail surface. Ke Ala Kahawai O Waimea is a county Parks and Recreation facility and follows the Waikoloa Stream in the center of Waimea. It can be accessed from the Waimea Outdoor Circle’s Nature Park.
