A 100-foot section of Opelo Road in Waimea remains closed this morning because of trees hanging over the roadway causing a “hazardous situation,” Hawaii Police Department South Kohala District Capt. Aimee Wana said.
Motorists are asked to avoid the road between Hokuula and Konokohau roads for the next eight hours, she said. A private contractor, hired by the landowner, is in the area removing trees.
Lae Lae and Konokohau roads can be used to access Lihipali and Konokohau roads, as well as the upper portion of Opelo Road, according to police.
The road first closed about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after one tree had fallen and remained closed through the night because of hazards, she said. Power was interrupted to some residents for about two hours on Wednesday while the first tree was removed.
