Pahala library to celebrate 50 years
Pahala Public and School Library will celebrate its 50th anniversary of service to Ka‘u and National Library Week from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The library’s normal service hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
The free public celebration will feature performances by local hula halau, the Ka‘u Middle and High School ensemble and ukulele class, and a craft demonstration conducted by the Hawaiian Civic Club of Ka‘u. Airbrush tattooing will begin at 1 p.m. Student winners of a haiku-writing contest will read their poems based on the theme “communities matter at your library” at 2 p.m.
The Friends of the Ka‘u Libraries is sponsoring the event. Door prizes will be awarded; refreshments will be served.
The friends will conduct a book sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Friday.

Cruise Night to benefit March of Dimes
A Cruise Night at Lanihau Center to benefit March of Dimes March for Babies is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The free public event is open to all vehicles, from antiques to hot rods, classics, VWs, trucks and bikes.
Along with dozens of colorful and exotic vehicles, the program features a fundraiser to help the March of Dimes help keiki with medical problems. Everyone making a donation will get tickets for giveaways awarded every half hour, between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Prizes are provided by Lanihau Center merchants and other local businesses.
