Positive Coaching Alliance today
The Department of Parks and Recreation will host a Positive Coaching Alliance workshop at 6 p.m. today at Old Kona Airport Park’s main pavilion.
Registration for the two-hour workshop will take place at 5:30 p.m., and a fee of $5 includes a workshop booklet.

Keauhou Canoe Club family fun day Sunday
Keauhou Canoe Club will host a keiki training event from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday at Keauhou Bay.
Children ages 8 to 14 will learn basic paddling techniques and strokes as well as swim and water safety. They will also learn about six-man, two-man and one-man paddling with canoe rides.

Keauhou Canoe Club begins its practice schedule next week at Keauhou Bay. Days and times are subject to change.

Torch Run Sunday
in Kailua-Kona
The Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Kailua-Kona First Hawaiian Bank branch in Lanihau Shopping Center.
From First Hawaiian Bank, runners and walkers will go down Palani Road to Kailua Pier before heading south on Alii Drive and continuing to Hale Halawai. Participants will then turn around, return to Kailua Pier and go up Palani Road to the race finish at The Club in Kona.
Registration will begin an hour before the race at First Hawaiian Bank, and race organizers will sell Torch Run T-shirts for $30. The race honors Troy Barboza, a fallen Hawaii police officer and a former Special Olympics Hawaii coach. The Hawaii Police Department, a race sponsor, will carry its Flame of Hope throughout the streets of Kailua-Kona to raise funds for Special Olympics West Hawaii.
A Special Olympics athlete will carry the Flame of Hope during the final leg of the Torch Run and light a cauldron at The Club in Kona to signify the beginning of the Weinberg Regional Special Olympics Powerlifting Meet at The Club in Kona. Kayak fishing
clinic April 13-14
A fishing clinic for kayakers will be held April 13 and 14. The session on April 13 starts at 9 a.m. at P&P Kayaks at 73-4976 Kamanu Street, Suite 101. The session will cover basic fishing by kayak in Hawaiian waters. Participants will construct their own fishing rigs for inshore and ocean offshore species.
The April 14 session will be on the water with a probable launch site from Keauhou Bay.

Hawaii Cycling Club time trials this month
The Hawaii Cycling Club will present the Waikola Beach team time trial and the Hapuna Beach time trial this month to bicyclists of all ages and abilities.
The Waikola Beach team time trial will be at 8 a.m. April 13. Cyclists are encouraged to form teams of three to four riders. Individual cyclists will be assigned to a team. The race will begin at the Highway 19 sign just south of Waikola Beach Road. Cyclists will ride 16.7 miles south to Kona International Airport.
Registration will be from 7 to 7:40 a.m. adjacent to Bike Works Beach and Sports in the Queens’ MarketPlace. A prerace meeting will be held at 7:50 a.m. near the start line.
The Hapuna Beach training time trial will be held at 8 a.m. April 20 starting at the entrance to the Hapuna Beach parking lot. Cyclists will ride mauka on Hapuna Beach Road, turn south on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway to the Waikoloa Village Road intersection, where they will make a U-turn (police will be directing traffic) and ride north to the finish line near Kaunaoa Drive for a total travel of 12.7 miles.
Registration will be from 7 to 7:40 a.m. near the snack bar at Hapuna Beach. The prerace meeting will be held at the start line at 7:50 a.m.
At the end of HCC events there is a talk story/aid station.

Kona Horseshoe Pitchers tournament April 20-21
The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club’s annual Hand of Friendship Horseshoe Tournament will be held at 8 a.m. April 20-21 at Old Kona Airport Park behind the tennis courts.
The tournament will follow a mixed doubles format. The play for April 20 will require a $25 registration fee, and it will use a count-all scoring system with no handicaps.
The top 10 scorers will then be able to compete on April 21 in a 10-round championship class event. There is a $20 entry fee for the second day.

KGMA hunting
permits available
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will grant muzzleloader animal control permits for feral goats and feral sheep at Kaohe Game Management Area through April 14.
Kaohe Game Management Area is an archery unit for game mammals with no bag limit for sheep and goats. To increase public harvest efficiency of feral goats and sheep, DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife is allowing the use of muzzleloaders for licensed hunters by permit.
Permits will be available at the Kilohana check station for muzzleloader for feral goats and sheep with no bag limit, but every effort must be made to retrieve and harvest animals within designated areas.
Hunters must use every safety precaution in using muzzleloaders. Blaze orange is required for all hunters in Kaohe GMA, including archery hunters.
DLNR is increasing hunter participation in Kaohe GMA to protect Palila Critical Habitat from overgrazing of mamane trees from feral goats and sheep. Further information may be obtained by contacting the DOFAW offices in Hilo at 974-4221 or in Waimea at 887-6063.
KS-West Hawaii golf tournament Saturday
The parent association of Kamehameha Schools West Hawaii will hold its 14th annual golf tournament Saturday at Big Island Country Club. Check in will be at 9 a.m., and a shotgun start will follow at 10 a.m.
The entry fee is $100 per player, and the format will be two-man scramble format. Lunch and awards will follow.

KBXtreme to host PBA regional tournament
Approximately 40 professional bowlers will come to the Big Island for the PBA West/Northwest Kona Open Regional Bowling Tournament, which will take place April 22-23 at KBXtreme.
Some of the pros expected to attend include Norm Duke, Rhino Page, Scott Norton, Josh Blanchard, Missy Parkin, Michael Fagan, Tommy Jones, Steve Smith and Tom Hess.
The event also includes a pro-am in which amateurs can compete with the professionals. KBXtreme is seeking sponsors to ensure a successful tournament.

Kai Ehitu Canoe Club will hold its inaugural benefit golf tournament Saturday at Kona Country Club. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and shotgun start follows at 8 a.m.

Fords to appear on Emily T. Gail Show
Billy and Theresa Ford, Big Island residents for more than 30 years and relatives of Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Phil Coke, are guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available under “lineup” at espnhawaii.com and as an iTunes podcast.
They will discuss Coke’s activities when he visits, including working on his pitching at Old Airport Park’s baseball fields. They will also discuss his interactions with youth sports teams at the park.
