RIO DE JANEIRO — Usain Bolt opened his season with a 150-meter win on a track set up at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.
Bolt cruised to victory in 14.42 seconds, falling short of the world-best mark of 14.35 he set on the streets of Manchester in 2009. Antigua and Barbuda’s Daniel Bailey was second, ahead of Bruno Lins of Brazil and Alex Quinones of Ecuador.
Also Sunday, double-amputee Alan Oliveira of Brazil beat American runner Jerome Singleton at the Copacabana track. Oliveira originally was to race against Oscar Pistorius, who withdrew after being charged with the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Weber wins TOC for his 10th PBA major
INDIANAPOLIS — Pete Weber tied Earl Anthony by winning his 10th major Professional Bowlers Association title with a 224-179 win over Australian Jason Belmonte in the Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
Weber also became the first bowler to finish the PBA triple crown a second time by adding his second Tournament of Champions to his two World Championships titles and five U.S. Opens.
Weber won Sunday with three doubles, four spares and help from Belmonte, who left the 4-10 split three times and failed to convert it twice. The 50-year-old said he has no plans to retire soon.
His win Sunday was his 37th, tying him for third place on the PBA list with Norm Duke, behind Walter Ray Williams Jr., who has 47, and Anthony with 43.
Cruise makes visit
to Maracana Stadium
RIO DE JANEIRO —Tom Cruise took time off from promoting his latest movie in Brazil by visiting Maracana Stadium and meeting former Brazilian football star Zico.
Cruise posed for photos at the stadium’s newly installed pitch holding a Brazil jersey with his name on the back.
The actor told Globo TV it “would be an honor” to make it to the 2014 World Cup final at the famed venue. He received an autographed ball from Zico.
