NORMAN, Okla. — As a child, Steve Davis dreamed of playing for Oklahoma and even tucked away a picture of the Sooners’ quarterback he idolized in his dresser drawer.
Decades later, he is among the standard-bearers for the position at one of college football’s most storied programs. Davis, who started every game during Barry Switzer’s first three seasons as head coach and won national championships in 1974 and 1975, died Sunday in a plane crash in South Bend, Ind. He was 60.
“This is a tragic loss,” Switzer said. “Steve was a tremendous role model for student-athletes everywhere. He was a good student and a fantastic person. He was a minister who traveled across the country inspiring thousands with his message, his words and his lifestyle.”
Dominicans beat Netherlands 4-1,

SAN FRANCISCO — This time, the Dominicans didn’t let the Netherlands interfere with their road to the World Baseball Classic championship.
Late lineup addition Moises Sierra hit a tying RBI double in the fifth, Jose Reyes added a go-ahead single two batters later and the Dominican Republic reached the WBC final with a 4-1 win against the Netherlands on Monday night.
Edwin Encarnacion had an RBI single as the undefeated Dominicans survived a rocky start from winner Edinson Volquez, who benefited from Sierra’s catch over the left-field wall in foul territory to end a first-inning threat.
“We didn’t try to make history,” Volquez said. “We’re just trying to keep winning.”
Now, it’s Dominican Republic vs. Puerto Rico, Take Two, for the title. The teams will play Tuesday night at AT&T Park just three days after the Dominicans (7-0) won Saturday in Miami before each club flew West.
2 charged with
threats in Ohio rape case
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A day after two high school football players were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl, authorities have arrested two Ohio girls suspected of making social media threats against the accuser.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said the girls arrested Monday posted threatening Facebook and Twitter comments on Sunday, the day the players were convicted in Steubenville. The girls are being held in juvenile detention on allegations of aggravated menacing.
A judge sentenced the players to at least a year in juvenile prison. A grand jury will look into whether others broke the law by not speaking up after the attack last summer. That group could include other teens, parents, school officials and coaches for the high school’s beloved football team, which has won nine state championships.
Calif. raceway crash probe looks at steering wheel
SAN FRANCISCO — Authorities are investigating whether a faulty steering wheel caused a California raceway crash that killed two people, including the young cousin of the teenage driver, officials said Monday.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department is looking into witness reports that the detachable steering wheel came off just before 17-year-old Chase Johnson’s car careened off the dirt track and crashed into pit row Saturday evening, Undersheriff Jerry Read said.
Race car owner Dale Wondergem, 68, of Grass Valley and Marcus Johnson, 14, of Santa Rosa were killed by the collision at Marysville Raceway Park, about 40 miles north of Sacramento, officials said.
Autopsies were scheduled Monday.
