Junior forward Ian Namu poured in 25 points, and junior guard Noel Bueno added 18 as Mililani put its Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I state tournament contest against Kamehameha-Hawaii out of reach by halftime, beating the Warriors 84-68 Wednesday in a first-round game at Oahu’s Moanalua High.
The Trojans (11-4), the Oahu Interscholastic Association’s No. 5 seed, outscored BIIF runner-up Kamehameha (10-6) 27-12 in the second quarter to take a 51-28 lead at halftime. Senior guard Peter Bueno added 12 points, and senior forward Sylvester Panoncillo followed with 10 for Mililani.
The Trojans advanced to today’s quarterfinals at Moanalua, where they will face OIA champion Kalaheo (14-0) at 7 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Warriors will face OIA No. 4 seed Farrington (10-5) at 3 p.m.
Senior guard Shaun Kagawa led Kamehameha with 25 points. Junior guards Blaine-Allen Manliguis and Micah Carter added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
In other games, OIA No. 6 seed Pearl City upset OIA runner-up Moanalua 68-60 in overtime at McKinley High.
The Chargers (11-3) will return to McKinley to take on BIIF champion Konawaena (12-0) at 5 p.m. today in a state quarterfinal.
