Subaru Hawaii’s recent “Share the Love” event raised $30,000 for a group of five charities: $8,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii, $8,000 for Hawaii Wildlife Fund, $8,000 for Oahu SPCA, $3,000 for SPCA Maui and $3,000 for Hawaii Island Humane Society.
The business organization donated $250 for every new vehicle sold by Subaru Hawaii dealers from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31.
Two-day business workshop planned
The U.S. Small Business Administration Hawaii, MBDA Business Center and state Department of Transportation DBE Program will hold a free two-day business development series in Hilo for small businesses from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 12 and 13 at the Imiloa Astronomy Center.
The event will cover registering to do business with the federal government, business certifications, marketing, responding to a request for proposal, completing a business plan, how to be a successful subcontractor and financing government projects.
Attendees should represent businesses that meet SBA’s size standards, be present on both days and be able to make decisions on financial and contractual obligations.

Gear joins solar company staff
Mel Gear has joined the staff at Hawaiian Solar & Plumbing, Inc. Gear’s primary focus will be large-scale commercial projects.
For 13 years, Gear held the position of chief international engineer for Solahart in Perth, Australia. His primary tasks were system design and engineering project management of commercial solar water heaters for hotels, large apartments and government facilities in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, India, South Africa and Europe.
Educated in England, Gear holds two master’s degrees in engineering and physics and was a senior research fellow at Exeter University in England.
