The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) boys volleyball season continued Wednesday with matchups across the island. The regular season will wrap up April 22 with island playoffs beginning April 25. See the paper all month for updates.
Kealakehe 3, HPA 1
Kealakehe boys volleyball won its fifth straight game and avenged Hawaii Preparatory Academy in four sets in Wednesday’s matchup inside Waimea’s Castle Gymnasium. When the two squads played on March 6, Ka Makani won in five close sets.
The winning Waveriders improved to 5-1, while HPA lost its third straight match — falling to 3-4.
Kealakehe won the first set 25-20, but Ka Makani bounced back to win the second set 25-22. The Waveriders quickly adjusted and closed the final two sets 25-15 and 25-23.
Kealakehe will aim to keep its win streak alive with its next matchup against Kohala at 10 a.m. Saturday at home. Junior varsity will face off first. The Waveriders are 1-0 against the Cowboys this season.
HPA will try to get back in the win column Monday against local rival Kanu o ka ‘Aina in Waimea. It will be the first and only matchup between the two teams.
JV: HPA wins 2-0 — 25-15, 25-19.
Kona 3, Honoka‘a 0
Konawaena boys volleyball beat Honoka‘a for the second time this season after routing the Dragons in three sets Wednesday inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. Kona improved to 7-1 on the year while Honoka‘a dropped to 1-6.
The Wildcats won by set scores of 25-16, 25-8 and 29-27. It was the team’s fourth sweep this season.
Kona next plays Kanu on Wednesday in Waimea, while the Dragons also next play Kanu at 5 p.m. tonight in Honoka‘a town.
JV: Kona wins 2-0 — 25-6, 25-22.
Parker 3, Kanu 0
Parker boys volleyball swept Kanu for the second time this season on Wednesday inside Waimea District Park Gymnasium, improving to 5-2 overall on the season. Kanu fell to 1-4.
The Bulls won by set scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-12. Parker redeemed itself after falling to Kealakehe in five sets last week in Kona town.
Parker next faces Honoka‘a for the second time this season Monday night in Waimea. When the two squads last battled on March 25, the Bulls swept convincingly.
Kanu will also face the Dragons next, set to play at 5 p.m. tonight in Honoka‘a town.
