The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) spring sports season continued Tuesday with a variety of matchups across different events. See the paper all week for updates.
Baseball and softball
Kamehameha-Hawaii baseball won its third straight game after routing Kea‘au 17-0 at home. The Warriors improved to 7-0-1, while the Cougars are still in search of their first win at 0-6. The matchup was called after five innings.
KSH scored at least two runs in each inning, logging 13 hits to Kea‘au’s two. Kaikoa Nobriga led the Warriors in hits with three, while teammates Justin Kobojiri and Shiloh Santos had two apiece. KSH also had Zanden Kepaa, Noah Palea, Kamaka Ili, Iokepa Martines, Kanai Nettrour and Dayton Hanson collect one hit each.
Braden Gomes and Hunter Yamamoto were the Warriors’ pitchers, combining for two allowed hits, no runs and six strikeouts.
John Ramos and Rupert Gomes-Cabral posted the Cougars only hits with one each. Kea‘au went to Elson Kalawe, Victor Fernandez, Mikah Ibanez and Blayne DeMattos on the mound.
KSH will enjoy the rest of the week off before returning to the diamond against Kealakehe on Tuesday afternoon in Kailua-Kona. The Warriors are 1-0 against the Waveriders this season.
Kea‘au returns home to face Hilo at 3 p.m. Friday on the Cougars’ diamond. Kea‘au is 0-1 against the Vikings in 2025.
Also taking place on KSH’s campus was the Lady Warriors softball team scoring 20-or-more runs for the second time this season, beating Honoka‘a 23-19 for the second straight game. Despite being out-hit 16 to 11, KSH was able to get the win.
Kealohi Ili led the Lady Warriors with four hits, seven RBI and two homers, followed by teammates Layla Masaoka and Mya Domingo-Bautista with three hits apiece. Alaula Awong also had one hit.
Masaoka also was the winning pitcher on the mound for KSH, going all 7.0 innings and striking out 10. She was named the winning pitcher of the afternoon.
Honoka‘a was led by Keira Agdeppa with four hits and two RBI, followed by teammate Kanai Tolentino with four hits, five RBI and a home run. Kiarah Cacabelos finished with three hits, while Jaycia Silva and Hailey Coelho logged two apiece. Lady Dragon Keilee Dacquel also had one.
Agdeppa and Kayliah Kauahi were Honoka‘a pitchers in the circle.
KSH (4-2) won its third straight, and will look to keep it going against Kohala on April 18 in Kea‘au. It will be the first matchup between the two teams this season. The Dragons lost their fourth straight, falling to 1-4. They’ll be back on the diamond on Wednesday afternoon in Honoka‘a town against Ka‘u.
Volleyball
Hilo boys volleyball stayed unbeaten and notched its fifth straight-sets win of the season after a victory over KSH in Kea‘au. It was the second time the Vikings beat the Warriors this season.
Hilo won by set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-21. It was additionally the Vikings’ fourth straight 3-0 win.
Hilo’s Maluhia Tandal finished with a match-high 17 kills, followed by teammate Triston Canon with nine. Viking Eric Travis Canon posted a team-high 20 assists, while Jason Burrueta led the team in digs with 10.
KSH had no players in double figures in kills, but Jaydan Borling-Lewi led the squad with eight. Teammate Jayson Nakata finished with a match-high 21 assists, while Noah Lee had a match-high 12 digs.
Continuing to stay atop the standings, Hilo will look to keep it going against Connections at 5 p.m. tonight at home. The Vikings (9-0) will seek win No. 10 of this season.
Now at 7-3, the Warriors will try to get back in the win column against Pahoa at 5 p.m. Friday on the road. Junior varsity will play first.
