Baseball and softball action in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) continued over the weekend across the island. The season resumes this week.
Kona 9, Kea‘au 0
Konawaena baseball got back on track after dropping the last two games with a shutout of Kea‘au on Friday in Kealakekua. The winning Wildcats improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Cougars fell to a winless 0-6. It was the second time the two teams met this season, with Kona winning 1-0 on opening day in Kea‘au Village.
The Wildcats posted 10 hits to the Cougars six, and set the tone early by scoring six runs at the bottom of the first inning. Hayden Nishida, Kawika Fukunaga, Armenio Blanco, Jaeden Meyers and Tylan Corbin all logged two hits each for the green and white.
Kahiau Rivera was named the game’s winning pitcher for the Wildcats — allowing one hit and no runs while striking out four across 41 pitches (3.0 innings). Stephen Amafala-Marquard and Fukunaga also saw time on the mound.
Mikah Ibanez led Kea‘au with two hits, followed by teammates Victor Fernandez, Scott Ebesuno-Tahara, Elson Kalawe and Blayne DeMattos with one apiece.
On the mound, Rupert Gomes-Cabral and Ebesuno-Tahara combined for 10 allowed hits and nine runs while striking out two.
Honoka‘a 10, Kohala 0
Honoka‘a baseball won its fifth straight game after blanking Kohala 10-0 on Saturday in Kapa‘au. It was the third and final time the two teams are set to meet in 2025, with the Dragons (7-1) sweeping the season series.
The Cowboys are still in search of win No. 1 of the season, falling to 0-5.
Honoka‘a logged seven hits to Kohala’s two. Isaac Derego led the Dragons with two hits and four RBI, including a moonshot home run. Teammate Josyah Napoleon-Umeda added two more hits, while Chrys Coelho, Noah Erwin and K. Bajo with one each.
Jayden Salazar was named the game’s winning pitcher after allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out five through 4.0 innings. Napoleon-Umeda closed the game for Honoka‘a, striking out seven over the final 60 pitches (3.0 innings).
Kohala’s Hezekiah Wilson logged the team’s only two hits.
HPA 4, Pahoa 3
Hawaii Preparatory Academy baseball trailed Pahoa by three runs early, but logged four runs in the fourth and fifth inning to escape with the 4-3 win on Friday afternoon in Waimea.
Ka Makani improved to 5-2 and won its third straight, while the Daggers dropped to 4-2.
Nishiki Iwai and Wyley Ament led HPA with one hit each for HPA. Iwai was additionally named the game’s winning pitcher after allowing just two hits and one run while striking out nine across 6.0 innings. Lex Ni closed the game for Ka Makani in the final inning, allowing three hits and two runs.
Pahoa had five hits as a team.
KSH 28, Ka‘u 3
Kamehameha-Hawaii softball was firing on all cylinders in its 28-3 beatdown of Ka‘u on Saturday afternoon in Pahala. The game was called in the fourth inning.
It was the second time the Lady Warriors have scored 15-or-more runs this season. They elevated to 2-2, while the Lady Trojans are still winless at 0-4.
