The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) spring sports season continued Tuesday with matchups across the island.
Volleyball: Kona 3, Kohala 0
Konawaena boys volleyball remained undefeated in the early season after a straight-sets sweep of Kohala on Tuesday night inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. The Wildcats moved up to 4-0, while the Cowboys continue to struggle to find their footing at 0-3.
Kona narrowly won the first set 26-24, and dominated the other two — winning 25-12 and 25-16. It was the second straight match that the Wildcats have won in consecutive sets.
The green and white will aim to keep up their hot start to 2025 with their next match against local rival Kealakehe at 5 p.m. Friday inside the Waveriders’ gymnasium. The schools’ junior varsity squads will play each other first.
Kohala will try to get its first win in its next matchup against Parker at 5 p.m. Friday in Kapa‘au. Junior varsity will face off first.
JV: Kona wins 2-1 — 25-13, 22-25, 15-9.
Parker 3, Honoka‘a 0
Parker boys volleyball won its second straight match after a successful road trip against the hosting Dragons on Tuesday in the Honoka‘a Armory. The Bulls returned home with a 4-1 record, while the Dragons fell to 1-4.
Parker won the first set narrowly, 25-23, but put its foot on the gas in the final two frames — blasting the hosts 25-7 and 25-9 to complete the sweep.
All four of the Bulls wins have been in straight sets. Their next test will be up in the northern tip of the isle on Friday against Kohala. Honoka‘a has lost two straight, next set to face Hawaii Preparatory Academy at 5 p.m. Friday at home. Junior varsity will play first.
JV: Honoka‘a wins 2-1 — 25-19, 23-25, 15-10.
Kealakehe 3, Kanu 0
Kealakehe boys volleyball earned win No. 2 of the season after a straight-sets sweep of Kanu o ka ‘Aina on Tuesday night in Kailua-Kona. The visitors fell to 0-3.
The ‘Riders won by set scores of 25-15, 25-16 and a close 28-26 third set. Kealakehe has logged two sweeps thus far this season.
The ‘Riders next face Konawaena on Friday night in Kealakekua, while Kanu plays Kohala on Wednesday inside Waimea District Park Gymnasium.
KSH 3, Connections 0
Kamehameha-Hawaii boys volleyball had a successful trip to Hilo town Tuesday night, sweeping the hosting Connections School in straight sets. The winning Warriors won their third straight game, improving to 5-1 in the early season. The ‘Io still remain winless at 0-6.
KSH won by set scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-12. The Warriors have three straight-set wins this season.
KSH will enjoy the remainder of the week off before returning to the floor against Waiakea on Monday in Hilo town.
Softball: Pahoa 19, KSH 12
Pahoa softball outlasted KSH in Tuesday afternoon’s game in Kea‘au. The Lady Daggers won 19-12.
Pahoa got off to a blistering start, leading by as much as 10-1 after three innings. The Lady Warriors slowly got their bats in order and scored some runs, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
The paper was unable to obtain a state sheet from this game by deadline.
The Lady Daggers (1-1) next face KSH again on Monday in Pahoa town. The Lady Warriors are back on the diamond at 3 p.m. Friday at home, set to take on Ka‘u.
