BIIF: Warriors tie; Hilo and Waiakea sweep
Another week of Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) spring sports action kicked off Monday with baseball and boys volleyball matchups. See the paper all week for results and updates.
Baseball: Waiakea 0, KSH 0
In a 10-inning stalemate, Kamehameha Hawaii and Waiakea baseball ultimately decided to call Monday afternoon’s matchup in a tie. KSH moved to 4-0-1 overall, while Waiakea went to 3-1-1.
Waiakea went through three pitchers on the mound — Logan Doran for 7.0 innings, Ivor Brooks for 1.6 and Hurley Soong for 1.3. The trip combined for nine strikeouts with one allowed hit.
Noah Palea (7.0 innings) and Shiloh Santos (3.0 innings) pitched for KSH, combining for seven strikeouts across six hits allowed.
Waiakea’s Tycen Baruela led all batters with two hits, followed by teammates Jesse Inouye, Jerrell Alston, Kysen Honda and Teysen Tamiya with one apiece.
Palea was the only KSH batter that logged a hit.
Waiakea will next host Kealakehe at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hilo town, while KSH next takes the diamond against Konawaena at 3 p.m. Thursday in Kea‘au.
Volleyball: Hilo 3, Pahoa 0
Hilo boys volleyball handled business on the road Monday, sweeping the Daggers in Pahoa town. The Vikings won by set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-12 — displaying strong play on offense and defense.
Hilo logged 40 kills to Pahoa’s 21. Viking Maluhia Tandal finished with a match-high 14 kills on 23 attempts, followed by teammate Treidan Une with nine. Eric Travis Canon led Hilo in assists with 22. Kyran Canete and Ryden Devaney led the Daggers in kills with six each. Teammate Jheyden Haili led the group in assists with 23. Hilo remained unbeaten, moving to a BIIF-leading 6-0 with three wins in straight sets. The Vikings’ next test will be against the Cougars at Kea‘au High School, slated for 5 p.m. Thursday. Junior varsity will play first.
The 3-4 Daggers also next play Thursday, set to face Waiakea at 5 p.m. in Hilo town. Pahoa will look to find some ground after dropping the last three matches.
Waiakea 3, CLA 0
After falling to local rival Hilo last weekend, Waiakea boys volleyball got back on track in its straight-sets win over Christian Liberty Academy on Monday in Kea‘au.
The winning Warriors clinched the sets with scores of 25-10, 25-22 and 26-24.
Waiakea will look to keep it up with its next match against Pahoa on Thursday night at home.
The Canefire have lost two straight, and will aim to right the ship against Ka‘u at 5 p.m. Thursday at home.
