Yukiko “Yuki” Masaki, 94, of Hilo died March 8 at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in Papaaloa, she was retired from the former Hawaiian Telephone Co. and a member of Hilo Hooganji Mission. Gail Annette Keaoililani Souza-Save
Gail Annette Keaoililani Souza-Save, 76, of Kailua-Kona died March 5 in Kealakekua. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired social worker Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center, also worked for Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and Hale Lokahi, graduated in 1966 from Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu, University of Portland in Oregon, and earned her Master of Social Work at University of Hawaii at Manoa. She enjoyed time with family and friends, swimming, lauhala weaving and dancing hula and was a member of the ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu Society. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Monday, May 31 at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona. Burial at 11 a.m. Lunch and fellowship to follow. Survived by children, Maricia (Graham Conway) Save and Matthew Save of Kailua-Kona, Michael (Shayna) Save of Washington; siblings, Gwen Souza of Emeryville, Calif., and Lynn Higashiguchi of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren; aunts, uncles and cousins. John “Tim” Timothy Tunison
John “Tim” Timothy Tunison, 78, of Volcano died March 5 at home. Born in Hayward, Calif., he was a botanist and resource management specialist at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, assisted with ecological restoration at the Niaulani Campus of Volcano Art Center — where he led ecology classes and workshops — and was a guide for the Friends of Hawaii National Park. Bernard Henrich Waltjen Jr., 83, of Naalehu died Feb. 17 at home. Born in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, he was a retired machinist for the former Weber Aircraft and sculptor. John W. “Jack” Abouchar
John W. “Jack” Abouchar, 95, of Keauhou died Oct. 18, 2024, Hospice of Kona’s Nakamura Hale in Holualoa. He was an inventor, patent-holder and techology business developer whose companies made microscopic parts for defibrillators and gyroscopes, mass flow controllers and automated soldering machines, worked for North American Rockwell on unmanned non-Earth orbital studies, and was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran serving as engineering officer on the USS Remora, a Guppy II-class submarine. Survived by wife, Lynn Abouchar; children, Susan Creighton, J.D. Abouchar and Jan Marie Calle; stepchildren, Beth Wilson and Wendell Sechler; eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
