KAILUA-KONA — Sunday’s Peaman Dip & Dash Biathlon turned out to be an exciting morning, attracting nearly 100 biathletes to Kaiakeakua Beach to test their early season fitness.
The biathlon, which featured a 1/2-mile swim in Kailua Bay followed by a 2-mile sprint along Ali‘i Drive, also marked Peaman’s 441st event over a stretch of nearly four decades. The swim-run is always popular for both seasoned competitors and newcomers to the sport as it provides an ideal distance for anyone wanting to race, or others who just want to have fun.
Peaman has continued his commitment to the community by keeping his monthly biathlon series free while creating fun divisions for just about everyone. Recognizing that not all participants may be comfortable with both swimming and running, the event offers multiple divisions to cater to different interests and strengths. Athletes have the freedom to choose between the traditional swim-run format or opt for specialized divisions, which includes swim-only, run-only, and relay teams. This approach allows a wide range of competitors to join the fun and push themselves in their discipline and distance of choice.
In the men’s full-course division, Kealakehe senior and cross-country standout Archer Ankrum, claimed first in a blazing time of 26 minutes and 50 seconds. Finishing in second place was Peaman in a great time of 31:04, and not too far behind was Laurent Rouaud, who rounded out the podium with a strong finish of 31:23.
The women’s division also saw tight competition with Amber Weibel taking top honors in 32:06. Jamie Ronning followed close behind finishing in 32:34, while Chloe Magnuson claimed third place with a time of 33:01. The tight competition between these women reflected a talented women’s field to claim the top podium spot.
In addition to the long-course biathlon, the event also featured a shorter Pea Wee division that consisted of a 200-yard swim and a 1-mile run. This shorter course provided an excellent opportunity for younger athletes and those newer to the sport to participate. Brooke Rostau took first place in an impressive 12:24, followed by Grace Koenigs in 13:28 and Emily “Galaxy” Morace in third at 13:37.
The next Peaman Biathlon event will be held on March 30th at Kaiakeakua Beach. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Peaman at 938-2296.
