The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply County is inviting young artists to showcase their creativity and knowledge by entering its 7th Annual Keiki Water Conservation Poster Contest.
Hawaii Island kindergarteners through sixth-graders are encouraged to enter their original artwork by the deadline of Friday, March 14.
This year’s theme of “Being Water Wise is …” challenges keiki to illustrate how using water wisely can help to conserve this most precious resource — safe drinking water.
Entries will be judged based on creativity, inspiration and originality.
Water Conservation educational resources can be found under the “Conservation” link at www.hawaiidws.org.
“The Keiki Water Conservation Poster Contest is an opportunity for our youth to demonstrate their creativity and learn about the importance of protecting our water resources,” Mayor Kimo Alameda said in a press release. “Conservation requires all of us, and we look forward to celebrating their artistic skills and learning how we can all be more water wise as families and communities.”
Poster contest entries should be accompanied by a completed entry form available at www.hawaiidws.org, via email by contacting dws@hawaiidws.org, or by calling DWS on regular working days at (808) 961-8050.
Contest entries should be mailed to DWS in Hilo or dropped off at DWS’ offices in Hilo, Kona or Waimea by Friday, March 14.
Address locations and contest rules are listed on the entry form and at www.hawaiidws.org.
“Each year, we look forward to the creative and beautiful work by our island youth and are always amazed at their ability to connect their artistic talents with the importance of water as a vital resource,” Manager-Chief Engineer Keith Okamoto said in the press release. “Mahalo for your participation!”
There is no charge to enter the contest, and prizes will be awarded to the top three entries from each grade level, K-6.
First place prizes are valued at $150, second place prizes are valued at $100, and third place prizes are valued at $50.
