BIIF sports: KSH beats Waiakea; Kohala swipes for 29 steals
KEA‘AU — Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i girls basketball got back on track after falling to Kohala last week — beating the visiting Waiakea Lady Warriors 37-26 on Tuesday night on the KSH campus.

The hosting Warriors leaned on their defense in the win, holding an opponent to under 30 points for the eighth time this season. Kacie Feebo-Santiago led KSH with 11 points, while teammate Shailan Benevides added seven.
Waiakea’s Bryia Carenio, who averages 15.7 points per game for the Lady Warriors, scored a game-high 17 points. Teammate Shaylee Kahauolopua scored five.
Now at 10-5 on the season and 8-2 in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) slate, KSH is averaging 41.3 points per game while allowing 34.3. Its next test will be Wednesday night against Kealakehe in Kea‘au.
Waiakea fell to 4-6 overall and 3-5 in the BIIF. The Lady Warriors will next be tested against Hilo on Wednesday night at home.
Kohala 62, CLA 15
Kohala girls basketball had another strong showing on both ends of the court to earn its third consecutive win Tuesday, beating Christian Liberty Academy 62-15 in Kapa‘au. The Cowgirls sailed to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in league play, while the Canefire fell to 2-7.
Kohala posted another high-scoring performance, scoring over 20 points in each of the first two quarters and out-scoring the guests 18-0 in the third. The Cowgirls defense played a big part in that, too — swiping for an outstanding 29 steals as a team.
Kalia Marquz stuffed the Cowgirls’ stat sheet, tallying 18 points, three rebounds, five assists and 10 steals. Teammate Adriana Jayne Soriano pitched in 17 points and six rebounds, while Mahea Pang posted eight points, four rebounds and four steals.
Nobody from CLA reached double figures in scoring, but Chesney Hara led the group with five points. Mikaili Banetto-Payomo and Kaia Roberts combined for six.
Since the Cowgirls began their BIIF schedule, they’ve averaged almost 55 points per game while allowing just under 27. They’ll be back in action against Kea‘au at 5:30 p.m. this evening inside King Kamehameha Park Gymnasium. Junior varsity will tip off first, and varsity will follow.
The Canefire will look to get back on track Jan. 16 against Hilo on the road.
Pahoa 60, Kealakehe 14
Pahoa girls basketball’s high-octane offense scored 50 points or more for the fifth time this season during Tuesday’s 60-14 beatdown over Kealakehe in Pahoa town. The Lady Daggers improved to 9-1, remaining one of the isle’s most formidable teams.
Pahoa’s Sophia Moniz, who averages just under 17 points a night, scored a game-high 16 points. Teammates Remedy Gonzalez added 14, while Jill Shipp and Teysia Tai combined for 21.
Sophia Lung was the Lady Waveriders’ top scorer with eight points. Kealakehe remains winless on the season at 0-9.
The Lady Daggers have won five straight (averaging 47.8 points per game), and will next be tested on Wednesday night against Ka‘u in Pahala.
The Lady ‘Riders next take the court Monday against Hawaii Preparatory Academy at home.
Soccer: KSH 10, Ka‘u 0
KSH girls soccer won its sixth straight match in dominant fashion, routing the visiting Lady Trojans of Ka‘u 10-0 in the opening half of Tuesday’s matchup, ending the contest at halftime. It was the fourth occurrence that the Lady Warriors scored seven-or-more goals this season.
KSH had two players secure hat tricks — Awaikapanahenahe Waipa in the second, 14th and 22nd minute and Mia Chow in the third, 14th and 39th minute. Sanoe Quintana also scored two of her own, while teammates Kae-Lee Rapozo and Aisyss Respicio-Ragocos scored one apiece.
The 6-1-1 Lady Warriors have out-scored opponents 39-3 this season, including six shutouts. They’ll return to action against Kealakehe at 4 p.m. Saturday at Waverider Stadium.
Ka‘u (0-4-0) will drive north to face Honoka‘a at 3 p.m. Saturday in Honoka‘a town.
Honoka‘a 3, Parker 0
Honoka‘a boys soccer earned its first win of the 2024-25 season with a 3-0 win over Parker on Tuesday in Waimea.
The first half went scoreless, but the Dragons broke through in the closing 40 minutes. The paper was unable to locate the goal scorers from this match.
Now at 1-6-0, Honoka‘a will look to build on this win with its next matchup against Ka‘u on Saturday afternoon at home. The Bulls fell to 0-5-0, and will try to redeem themselves against Waiakea on Tuesday in Waimea.
Hilo 2, Kealakehe 1
Hilo boys soccer had a successful road trip Tuesday to Kona’s coast, winning a 2-1 match against hosting Kealakehe at Waverider Stadium.

The Vikings soared to 4-1-1 overall, and will next host HPA at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wong Stadium. The Waveriders moved down to 3-1-0, and will next take on KSH at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waverider Stadium.
Hilo 7, Kealakehe 1
Hilo girls soccer trounced Kealakehe immediately following the boys match Tuesday at Waverider Stadium, winning 7-1.
The Lady Vikings improved to 4-2-1 overall while the Lady Waveriders dropped to 1-4-0. The paper was unable to locate the goal scorers from this match.
Hilo will next travel to Waimea to play Ka Makani at 3 p.m. Saturday at HPA. Kealakehe next hosts KSH at 4 p.m. Saturday at home.
