Pelosi has hip surgery after suffering injury during Europe trip
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had successful hip replacement surgery Saturday and is “well on the mend” after suffering an injury during a congressional trip to commemorate a World War II battle against Nazi Germany, her spokesperson said.
Pelosi, 84, was injured Friday during an official engagement marking 80 years since the Battle of the Bulge. U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., said he was near Pelosi when she fell. The New York Times reported she fractured a hip.
Pelosi was treated by military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a U.S. military hospital in western Germany, and at Kirchberg Hospital in Luxembourg, her spokesman Ian Krager said in a statement Saturday. She’s grateful to both hospitals “for their excellent care and kindness,” he said.
Many of the congressional delegation members had relatives who fought in World War II, including Pelosi’s uncle, Johnny, according to Krager.
Rep. Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on X he was disappointed Pelosi couldn’t attend the congressional delegation’s weekend events “as I know how much she looked forward to honoring our veterans.”
McCaul on Saturday posted images of himself addressing veterans who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, which pitted U.S., British and Canadian troops against German forces in Luxembourg and Belgium.
