“Each of these administrators are natural fits for their departments and bring a strong commitment to serving the public,” Alameda said in a statement. “In some cases, the search was extensive, and I couldn’t be more confident in the skills and leadership abilities that they bring to the County.”

The appointments include:

Corey Stone: Information Technology Director

Stone has worked as an information systems analyst at the Department of Information Technology since 2012. Before that, he worked for Hewlett-Packard in Colorado before moving to the Big Island in 2004.

Hugh Ono: Public Works Director

Having previously served as Public Works Director from 1984 to 1990, Ono is a professional engineer with a long career of administration work. He has worked as highways division administrator and a Hawaii district engineer for the state Department of Transportation, and was vice president of SSFM International Inc.’s Hawaii Island Office. He was named Hawaii State Engineer of the Year in 1992 and Hawaii Island Engineer of the Year in 1985.

Neil Azevedo: Public Works Deputy Director

Azevedo served as Public Works’ highway division chief since 2015, where he has been “a conduit for the County’s emergency response,” assisting with the county’s fire, police and Civil Defense agencies’ responses to various disasters, including hurricanes, flooding, brush fires and volcanic eruptions. He has also assisted in the construction, repair and upgrading of emergency evacuation routes in Lower Puna, Waikoloa, Puako and Keaukaha.
