HILO — Waiakea boys basketball got off to a blistering start to the 2024-25 season, routing St. Joseph 63-19 on Tuesday at home in the Warriors’ opener.
Waiakea (1-0) outscored the Cardinals in every quarter, led by Josiah Amuimuia, who finished with a game-high 22 points. Teammate Jayzen Hough added 12, followed by Neikeias Une with eight.
St. Joseph (0-1) had no double-figure scorers, but Amari Wiedemeir led the group with six points. Treysyn Carvalho was the Cardinals’ second-best scorer with four.
Now after starting the season on a high note, the Warriors will look to keep it going in their next matchup against Pahoa, which tips off 5:30 p.m. Friday at Waiakea High School. Junior varsity will play first.
St. Joseph will next tip off on Dec. 5 at Kea‘au High School, slated to play the Cougars.
Hilo 52, Honoka‘a 50
Hilo girls basketball escaped visiting Honoka‘a in overtime Tuesday inside the Lady Vikings’ gymnasium, winning 52-50 after outscoring the Lady Dragons 12-10 in the extra period.
Hilo’s (2-2 overall, 1-0 BIIF) Anuhea Ferreira tallied a team-high 16 points, leading her team this season with 16 points per game. Teammate Tianna Cabbab pitched in 10.
Ava Tabucbuc of Honoka‘a (2-3 overall, 2-1 BIIF) notched a game-high 18 points and two 3-pointers made, continuing her dominant season of averaging nearly 12 points per game. Teammate Megan Murkane added 11.
The Lady Vikings will next face Konawaena on Monday night at Hilo High, while the Lady Dragons will play Ka‘u in Pahala that same night.
Ka‘u 43, Kea‘au 27
Ka‘u girls basketball won its second straight game and first BIIF matchup on Tuesday night on the road against Kea‘au, handling business by a score of 43-27.
Leahi Kaupu led the Lady Trojans in scoring once again with 12, continuing to lead the group in scoring average. The Lady Cougars’ Lenzy Aldawan notched a game-high 14 points.
Next up for Ka‘u (3-1 overall, 1-0 BIIF) is Honoka‘a on Monday night in Pahala. Kea‘au will face Pahoa on Tuesday night in Pahoa town.
Konawaena 104, Kealakehe 1
Konawaena girls basketball boat-raced Kealakehe in its BIIF opener on Tuesday inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium, winning 104-1.
Lady Wildcats star Shaileia Hookahi-Bannister led with 16 points, followed by Mikaela Salazar-Harrell with 14. Kaylie Yamasaki added 12.
Sarah Broberg was the Lady Waveriders’ only scorer with
a point.
Kona (2-2 overall, 1-1 BIIF), who is looking to make another state tournament run this season, will continue its early slate with a matchup against Hilo on Monday night on the road.
Kealakehe (0-2) will face Waiakea on Tuesday at home.
