HILO — Waiakea girls volleyball avenged Hilo on Tuesday night in Hilo after falling to the Warriors in five sets in late September.
The Vikings took the first set 25-19, but Waiakea adjusted and won the final three frames — 25-14, 25-18 and 25-8. The Warriors moved to 12-3, remaining behind Konawaena and Hilo in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) Division I standings. Waiakea concluded its regular-season slate against Pahoa late Wednesday night in Pahoa town. See Friday’s paper for the results.
The Vikings fell to 13-2 after winning nine straight. They’ll have a shot to close their regular season on a high note with a match against unbeaten Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i tonight at Hilo High. Junior varsity will have first serve at 5 p.m.
Both teams will partake in the BIIF playoffs, which begin Friday. Matchups will be announced later this week.
Kealakehe 3, Kanu 0
Kealakehe girls volleyball picked up its seventh win of 2024 with a straight-sets victory over Kanu o ka ‘Aina on Tuesday inside the Waveriders Gymnasium. Kealakehe won by scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-12.
With the win, the Waveriders moved to 7-9 — tied with Kea‘au for fifth overall in BIIF Division I. Kanu dropped to 2-14, and its season has officially ended.
Kealakehe will be in the DI playoffs, with its matchup still to be decided.
Kohala 3, Honoka‘a 1
Kohala girls volleyball finished its regular season on a high note with a four-set victory over Honoka‘a in Kapa‘au. The Cowgirls won by scores of 25-15, 14-25, 25-19 and 25-8.
Kohala moved to 9-7, jumping to fourth overall in the DII standings. The Dragons finished the regular season at 8-8 — near the middle of the division’s standings. Honoka‘a still has a shot at a playoff berth.
