KEA‘AU — After dropping two consecutive matches, Waiakea girls volleyball got back on track with a straight-sets victory over Christian Liberty Academy on Tuesday night in Kea‘au.
The Warriors, who sit behind Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i and Konawaena in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) Division I standings, won by scores of 25-17, 25-7 and 25-9. Waiakea improved to 9-3 overall. The Canefire achieved their 10th loss (1-10).
The Warriors will next take the court against Kea‘au at 5 p.m. tonight in a home match in Hilo. Junior varsity will play first. CLA has the rest of the week off before going up against Kea‘au on Tuesday.
KSH 3, Ka Umeke 0
KS-Hawai‘i girls volleyball stayed unbeaten after a straight-sets rout of Ka Umeke on Tuesday in Hilo.
The Warriors won by scores of 25-6, 25-13 and 25-15. KSH’s Maile Kuamo‘o dished out 19 assists, setting up teammates Kira Palea, Mia Polloi and Sofia Quiacusan — who all posted six kills apiece to lead the match. Shay Beals and Kealohi Dudoit notched four service aces each.
The Warriors moved to 13-0 with three matches remaining in the regular season slate. They were also tested against Pahoa on Wednesday night in Pahoa town. Results will be in Friday’s paper.
KSH remains the favorite to win BIIF DI.
Ka Umeke is still winless in 2024, and will next drive south to Pahala town to play the Trojans at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ka‘u High School.
HPA 3, Kanu 0
Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls volleyball became the second team in BIIF Division II to reach double-digit wins on Tuesday, beating local opponent Kanu o ka ‘Aina in consecutive sets — 25-8, 25-11 and 25-6.
With the win, Ka Makani won its fifth straight and tied Parker for No. 1 in BIIF DII. Since HPA beat the Bulls in straight sets on Sept. 16, the red and white own the tiebreaker between the two.
Ka Makani will next host Honoka‘a at 5 p.m. tonight inside Castle Gymnasium. Junior varsity will play first.
Kanu (2-9) will next host south Kona team Ehunui at 10 a.m. Saturday inside Waimea District Park Gymnasium.
Honoka‘a 3, Kealakehe 1
Honoka‘a girls volleyball hosted the visiting Kealakehe Waveriders on Tuesday in Honoka‘a town. The Dragons beat the visitors in four sets — 28-26, 25-18, 16-25 and 25-18.
Honoka‘a moved to 6-5, while the ‘Riders fell to 5-7. The Dragons will play HPA tonight, while Kealakehe hosts Makua Lani Christian Academy at 5 p.m. Friday at home.
JV: Kealakehe wins 2-1.
