The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) girls volleyball season continued over the weekend all over the island. Many teams are at the midway points of their seasons, as BIIF playoffs begin in October.
HPA 3, MLCA 0
Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls volleyball hosted Makua Lani in a Friday night match in Kamuela’s Castle Gym. Ka Makani won handily in straight sets — 25-9, 26-10 and 25-6.
HPA moved to 7-1 on the season. Although Ka Makani is only a half-game back from Parker for the top spot in BIIF DII, HPA owns the tiebreaker after beating the Bulls in straight sets on Sept. 16.
Ka Makani will next drive south to play hosting Ehunui at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Old Kona Airport.
The Lions fell to 0-9. They’ll get a shot at redemption Tuesday against Kohala at home.
Konawaena 3, Honoka‘a 0
Konawaena girls volleyball hosted Honoka‘a on Saturday afternoon in Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium in Kealakekua. The Wildcats made quick work of the visiting Dragons, beating them in straight sets of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-12.
Kona improved to 8-1, officially moving a half-game ahead of Waiakea (7-1) in the BIIF Division I standings — with Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i firmly in the No. 1 spot at 9-0. The Wildcats are now winners of seven straight, and will look to keep it going against Kealakehe in a crosstown matchup on Tuesday night in the ‘Riders gymnasium. Junior varsity will play each other first at 5 p.m.
Honoka‘a (3-5) sits in the middle of the pack in the DII standings. Aiming to climb up the ladder, the Dragons will resume action with their next match against Ehunui at 5 p.m. tonight in Old Kona Airport’s Gymnasium. See the paper later this week to read the results.

Kohala 3, Kanu 0
Kohala girls volleyball hosted Kanu o ka ‘Aina in a home match Saturday morning in Kapa‘au. It was the first of two meetings this season between the schools. The Cowgirls beat the visitors in straight sets — 25-13, 25-6 and 25-18.
With the victory, Kohala improved to 4-5 on the season, while Kanu went to 2-7.
The Cowgirls will next travel south to Kona town to play the hosting Makua Lani Christian Academy Lions on Tuesday night at Old Kona Airport. Junior varsity will play first at 5 p.m.
Kanu will next face local rival Parker at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Waimea District Park Gymnasium.
Hilo 3, Ka‘u 2
Hilo girls volleyball won a thriller against DII opponent Ka‘u on Thursday night in Pahala. The Vikings escaped the Trojans in five competitive sets.
Hilo won the first two sets 25-17 and 26-24, but Ka‘u made a comeback by winning the next two to force the decisive fifth set — 25-20 and 25-23.
However, the Vikings set the record straight in the final frame, blasting the Trojans 15-3 to head back to Hilo town with a win.
Hilo moved to 5-1, now in fourth overall in DI. The Vikings will return to the floor at 5 p.m. tonight against Laupahoehoe at Hilo High.
Ka‘u (5-4) is currently ranked third in BIIF DII. The Trojans will next play Tuesday night against Kea‘au on the road. Junior varsity will have first serve at 5 p.m.
