KEALAKEKUA — Konawaena girls volleyball earned win No. 7 of the season Wednesday night inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. The Wildcats made quick work of Kanu o ka ‘Aina, beating the visiting Waimea team in consecutive sets.
Thanks to Kona’s team chemistry and defense at the net, the green and white coasted to victory. Kanu kept pace with its opposition early in each set, but the talent and teamwork on the other side was too much to overcome. The Wildcats won the sets by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-16 in the varsity-only matchup.
Now at 7-1, Kona is tied with Hilo school Waiakea in the No. 2 spot in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, a game-and-a-half behind Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i. The Wildcats will next host DII opponent Honoka‘a at 2 p.m. Saturday in Kealakekua. Junior varsity will have first serve.
Kanu (2-6) will head to Kapa‘au on Saturday to play the Cowgirls at Kohala High School. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
Kealakehe 3, Kohala 2
In a back-and-forth affair between both teams, Kealakehe girls volleyball escaped with a road win over Kohala on Wednesday in Kapa‘au.
The Cowgirls won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-21, but the Waveriders dug deep and forced a decisive third set — winning the third and fourth frames 25-19 and 27-25, respectively. In the final set, Kealakehe dominated on both sides of the net, closing the match 15-4 to earn its fifth win of 2024.
The ‘Riders are now at 5-4 on the season. Their next matchup will be another tough test in local rival Konawaena —scheduled for Tuesday night at Kealakehe High School.
Kohala (3-5) will host Kanu this weekend.
Parker 3, Ehunui 0
After suffering its first loss of the season earlier in the week, Parker girls volleyball got back on track with a straight-sets victory over Ehunui on Wednesday at Waimea District Park Gymnasium. The Bulls took care of business quickly, winning by scores of 25-4, 25-13 and 25-14. Parker’s first-frame win was its largest margin of victory in a set this season.
Now at 8-1, the Bulls still sit in the driver’s seat of BIIF DII. Their next test will be up against Kanu at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Waimea. Ehunui (2-6) will be back in action at 5 p.m. Monday against visiting Honoka‘a at Old Kona Airport.
Waiakea 3, Kea‘au 0
Waiakea girls volleyball maintained its No. 2 spot in BIIF Division I with a straight-sets win over Kea‘au on Wednesday on the road.
The Warriors won 25-19, 25-12 and 25-20. Waiakea is now at 7-1 in 2024, while the Cougars fell to 3-5 and sit in last in the BIIF DI standings.
The Warriors will enjoy a few days off before returning to the floor Wednesday against KS-Hawai‘i. The outing will come as a rematch from Monday’s game, in which KSH won in four sets.
Kea‘au will travel north to the Hamakua Coast to face the Laupahoehoe Seasiders at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Laupahoehoe 3, CLA 1
Laupahoehoe girls volleyball took care of Christian Liberty Academy in four sets Wednesday in Kea‘au.
The Seasiders won the match by scores of 25-4, 25-12, 22-25 and 25-19.
Now at 3-6, Laupahoehoe will aim for another win against Kea‘au this weekend. The Canefire (0-8) returned to action against Ka Umeke on Thursday night in Hilo. See the paper this weekend to read results.
CLA will also travel to Pahoa town next week to play the Daggers on Wednesday.
