KAMUELA — Konawaena girls volleyball got the best of Hawaii Prep Academy in a 3-1 road match victory on Wednesday in Ka Makani’s Castle Gym.
The Wildcats won by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-21. With the win, Kona jumped ahead to 5-1 in the early season — sitting in the No. 4 spot of BIIF DI behind Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i, Waiakea and Hilo. Its next test will be against Kohala at 5 p.m. tonight in Kapa‘au. Junior varsity will play first.
Ka Makani (5-1) is now tied with Ka‘u in second in BIIF DII standings behind Parkeer. HPA will next play the Bulls in the highly-anticipated matchup between BIIF DII’s top-two teams on Monday night in Waimea District Park Gym.
JV: HPA wins 2-1 — 25-23, 21-25, 15-9.
Hilo 3, CLA 0
Hilo girls volleyball continued its undefeated start with a straight-sets victory over Christian Liberty Academy on Wednesday at Hilo High.
The Vikings won the first two sets in a breeze — 25-9 and 25-7 — but the Canefire showed more fight in the final set. However, Hilo still escaped 25-18 to close the night out.
The Vikings (3-0) stay in third in BIIF DI. They additionally played KS-Hawai‘i late Thursday night. See tomorrow’s paper for the results.
CLA (0-7) is still in search of its first win and sits in the cellar of BIIF DII. The Canefire will try again against Laupahoehoe at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Kea‘au.
Ka‘u 3, Pahoa 2
Ka‘u girls volleyball was able to escape Pahoa on Wednesday in Pahala — beating the Daggers in five sets.
The Trojans won set No. 1 25-19, but Pahoa answered back with a 27-25 edge in set two. The Daggers piled it on more with a 25-19 win in the following frame.
With its back against the wall down 2-1, Ka‘u won set No. 4 28-26. In the deciding fifth set, the Trojans prevailed again by winning 15-8.
Ka‘u (5-1) is tied with HPA for second place in its division. Next up, the Trojans will face DI powerhouse Waiakea at 5 p.m. tonight in Hilo. Junior varsity will play first.
Pahoa (3-3), currently in the top-half of BIIF DII standings, will also play tonight — slated to play the Cougars at 5 p.m. at Kea‘au High School. Junior varsity will additionally play first.
Kealakehe 3, Kanu 0
Kealakehe girls volleyball notched its second win of the season with a straight-sets victory over Kanu o ka ‘Aina on Wednesday in Waimea
The ‘Riders won 25-20, 25-17 and a strong 25-8 third set.
Now at 2-4, Kealakehe will next take on DII west-side opponent Ehunui at 10 a.m. Saturday at Old Airport.
Kanu (1-5) will try to redeem itself against Makua Lani Christian Academy — slated for 5 p.m. tonight at Old Airport.
