Wayne Souza, 71, of Honokaa died Aug. 4 at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born in Honokaa, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, truck driver for HPM and the former Hamakua Sugar Co., veteran of Hawaii Army National Guard and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 31) at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa; Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Urn burial to follow at Honokaa Catholic Cemetery. Casual attire. Survived by forever companion, Shannon Berdon of Honokaa; son, Kawika Souza of Honokaa; daughter, Pohai Souza of Honokaa; stepdaughter, Chelsea (Greg Wright) Miller of Wisconsin; brother, Manuel (Jennifer) Souza Jr. of Kalopa; sister, Sharon (Alexis) Demello of Ahualoa; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; nephews and nieces. Martin Bergado Ellazar

Sr., 102, of Kurtistown died Aug. 7 at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in Urdaneta, Pangasinan, Philippines, he was an independent papaya farmer and a retired as a lab assistant for the former Olaa Sugar Plantation. Visitation 9:30-10 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 31) at Ballard Family Mortuary in Hilo. Service at 10 a.m. Burial noon at Homelani Memorial Park. Ronald Kiyoto “Fats” Watarida

Ronald Kiyoto “Fats” Watarida, 82, of Hilo died July 1 in Mililani, Oahu. Born in Olaa, he was a warehouse manager for the former Waldrons Ltd., member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and its Senior YBA, assistant scout master of Hilo Hongwanji Boy Scout Troop 23, and rooster and previous active member of Hilo Jaycees. Michael “Mike” Preston Everett

Michael “Mike” Preston Everett, 85, of Mountain View died July 22 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. Born Kansas City, Kan., he was a U.S. Navy retiree and Vietnam War veteran, employee of the former Burns International Security and Molokai General Hospital and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3830 and Big Island Coin Club. Steve Whetzel, 76, of Kailua-Kona died Aug. 10 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Petersburg, W.Va., he was a certified public accountant and certified fraud examiner, U.S. Navy Vietnam War veteran, member of Kona Elks, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and commander of American Legion Post 20.
