Free community event at Kahalu‘u Beach today
The sixth-annual Aunty Joy Keahi Mills Memorial Surf Day will be held all day at Kahalu‘u Beach Park — inviting all surfers with disabilities the opportunity to access the beach and surf safely.
The event is made possible by various community volunteers, including watermen and women from Hawaii County Ocean Safety, professional surf instructors, the Hawaii County Fire Department, volunteers from the Department of Education, small businesses and various non-profits.
Offering both aquatic and land activities, Surf for Special Needs is highly encouraging the community to come out and show support to the surfers.

Thursday BIIF sports
Ka‘u girls volleyball hosted Christian Liberty Academy on Thursday night in Pahala, and the Trojans made quick work of the visiting Canefire. Ka‘u won in straight sets — 25-6, 25-14 and 25-12.
Now at 2-1 in the early season, the Trojans will next face Ka Umeke at 5 p.m. Thursday on the road.
CLA (0-2) faces KS-Hawai‘i at 10 a.m. today on the road in Kea‘au.
KS-Hawai‘i (2-1) football traveled to the Hamakua Coast on Thursday evening to face the Honoka‘a Dragons (0-2). Despite inclement weather challenges, the Warriors were able to grab the road win — 33-14.

Weekend weather to impact BIIF games
With massive tropical storms expected over the weekend, Saturday night’s Maui vs. Kea‘au football game has been postponed. A make-up date is yet to be announced.
As of Friday afternoon, all remaining weekend BIIF games are still scheduled, but it remains a fluid situation. Updates will be provided by the paper.
Correction
West Hawaii Today and Hawaii Tribune-Herald mistakenly left out former Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i boys volleyball setter Nainoa Paio’s full name in Friday’s paper while reporting his recognition for BIIF Division I Player of the Year for the 2024 season.
Both papers regret the error, and would like to congratulate Paio on his success last season!
