Tropical Gardening: Manures and other nutrient sources to enrich our young volcanic soils

Coconut palms planted along the access road to Kona’s harbor are suffering from nutritional deficiencies and lack of water. By applying compost and mulch, they can better thrive. Gerald Kosaki, general manager of Hawaiian Earth Recycling, has offered to supply material for free to keep these trees vigorous and happy. Rebecca Villegas, Hawaii County councilwoman, is looking into ways to assist in applying the material around the trees. (Voltaire Moise/Courtesy photo)

Our young volcanic soils are often in need of organic matter and nutrients. Where animal manures are available they are probably the best source of fertilizer. Compost and mulch can also help to add and hold nutrients.
