KEA‘AU — Ka‘u girls volleyball got back on track with a bounce-back win over Kea‘au on Tuesday night in the Cougars’ home gymnasium.

The Trojans won in four sets. Ka‘u took the first set 25-13, but Kea‘au answered right back with a narrow 25-23 second-set victory. The Trojans responded by winning set No. 3 25-16, but closing out the match was the most difficult task of the night for Ka‘u. It won a 27-25 nailbiter fourth set to clinch the first win of 2024.

Going 15-2 overall and making the state tournament a year ago, the Trojans (1-1) hope to build on their momentum in the new season. Their next test will be against Christian Liberty Academy at 5 p.m. tonight in Pahala.

The Cougars (0-1) will face Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) powerhouse Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i at 6 p.m. Friday at the Warriors’ home court. It will be KSH’s first match of the season.

Kohala 3, MLCA 0

Kohala girls volleyball notched its first win of the season against Makua Lani Christian Academy on Tuesday in Kapa‘au. The Cowgirls won the first set in dominant fashion — 25-6 — then closed the match 25-9 and 25-10 in the remaining two frames for the straight-sets victory.

Going 10-5 a year ago, Kohala hopes to take another big step this fall. The Cowgirls will next play Parker School at 10 a.m. Saturday at home, with junior varsity kicking things off first.

The Lions (0-1) will face local opponent Kealakehe at 6 p.m. Tuesday inside the Waveriders’ gymnasium.

JV: Kohala wins in three sets — 25-16, 18-25, 15-10.
