UHH athletics: Vulcans student-athletes once again set new academic marks

HILO, Hawai’i – Sixty Hawai’i Hilo student-athletes were announced as recipients of the 2023-24 Division 2 Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award after attaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

The Vulcans’ 60 student-athletes were among 1,124 honorees from the Pacific West Conference, ranking third in all of Division II.

For the 2023-24 school year, Hawai’i Hilo Athletics posted its highest academic-year GPA with a combined mark of 3.28.

“As the athletics director, the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes is what makes me most proud,” Hawai’i Hilo director of athletics Patrick Guillen said. “Of course, all of our teams strive for athletic excellence, but it is the academic achievements that are going to open up the windows of opportunity for our young men and women in their futures.”

This was the 17th iteration of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Awards with an all-time high of 19,774 total student-athletes recognized.

To earn recognition, student-athletes are required to have attended at least two years of college-level work while also being an active member of an intercollegiate team during the academic year.

“This recognition highlights the commitment and dedication that is required of our student-athletes to excel in the classroom and in their area of study,” Guillen continued. “It also is a testament to our staff, who are dedicated to providing the support and resources necessary to ensure their success.Congratulations!”

The D2 ADA is the first organization of its kind to provide educational and networking opportunities; enhancement of acceptable operating standards and ethics; and establishment of the overall prestige and understanding of the profession of Division II athletics directors.
