Keauhou Canoe seeking scholarship applicants

Keauhou Canoe Club is seeking applicants for its annual academic and achievement scholarships. Two different $2,000 scholarships are available to any West Hawaii graduating senior who has paddled at the club or high school level in the past three years.

The $2,000 James F. Rogers Academic Achievement Scholarship is open to those who also had a 3.0 GPA or higher and demonstrated academic achievement and community participation. The $2,000 Mike Haines Merit Achievement Scholarship is open to those with strong academics, plus a demonstrated active volunteerism and leadership in school, community, church or employment environments.

Fishing tournament this weekend

The 43rd annial Wee Guys Fishing Tournament will return this weekend to Kailua Pier — hosting anglers from all corners of the globe.

Festivities begin today and will run through Sunday. The tournament is currently sold out at 130 boats. The weekend will have three divisions — marlin, ono and mahimahi. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. Heaviest aku of the weekend will receive a special prize.

Minimum qualifying weights for the tournament are as follows: Marlin 150 pounds, ahi 100 pounds, ono 20 pounds, mahimahi 15 pounds and aku 10 pounds. Live bait will be permitted, but claw hooks and hookless lures are not. Power-driven reels are additionally prohibited. Anglers are allowed to fish from north Kiholo Bay to south Kauna Point. There must be a minimum crew number of two at all times, and each vessel must be a maximum length of 23 feet, six inches.

The team with the highest-combined weight of two or more different flag fish (listed above) along with the minimum qualifying weight of the two fish will be crowned grand champion.

Davis named ‘Man of the Match’

Kailua-Kona native and Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i alum Pono Davis was named Live Oak Vodka’s ‘Man of the Match’ for Week 16 on Wednesday after posting five carries, two offloads, nine tackles and 18 breakdowns in the Houston Sabercats’ professional rugby match against the Seattle Seawolves last weekend on the road. Houston won the match 28-25.
