Police investigating potential drowning in Kainaliu

Police are investigating the possible drowning death of a 58-year-old Oahu man Thursday afternoon at Kainaliu Beach in Kona.

At about 12:34 p.m., Kona patrol officers and Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to the beach on the report of a possible drowning.

Witnesses told officers, the man had been seen swimming about 50 feet offshore when he started calling for help. A friend of the man assisted him onto shore. The man was reportedly not breathing and unresponsive, so bystanders started CPR and called 911.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Foul play isn’t suspected. Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
