During the week of May 20-26 — which includes Friday and Saturday of the Memorial Day holiday weekend — Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Hilo, six; Puna, three; Ka‘u, two; North Hilo and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 386 DUI arrests compared to 408 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4%.

There have been 396 major crashes so far this year, compared to 362 during the same time last year, an increase of 9.4%.

To date, there have been 18 official traffic fatalities, compared to nine fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 100%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
