Doris Yasuko Kuwahara, 99, of Hilo, formerly of Pahoa, died March 7 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center in Hilo. Born in Kapapala, Ka‘u, she was the retired co-owner of the Hawaiian Greenhouse company and a member of Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple. Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by children, Alan (Lynne) Kuwahara, Gail (Gordon) Takaki and Lance (Sandra) Kuwahara of Hilo, Carol (Kelsey) Deguchi of Waipio, Oahu, and Colin Kuwahara of Pahoa; brother, Bob Nishimura of Sedona, Ariz.; sister, Ellen Mizota of Kaneohe, Oahu; sisters-in-law, Florence Nishimura and Kikuko “Kay” Kuwahara of Hilo; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins. Kenichi “Roy” Hatayama
Kenichi “Roy” Hatayama, 93, of Hilo died May 3 at a private care home in Hilo. Born in Olaa, he was retired from Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii, worked for the former Holsum Bakery, a U.S. Army veteran, active with the Boy Scouts of America and member of Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Mission. Visitation 9-10 a.m. Friday (May 31) at Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Mission, 216 Mohouli St. Memorial service at 10 a.m. Graveside urn committal service to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2. Casual attire. Survived by sons, Carl (Tina) Hatayama of Portland, Ore., Brian (Marilyn DelaCruz) Hatayama and Kent Hatayama of Hilo, Mark (Scarlett) Hatayama of Keaau; daughter, Gayla (John) Kurokawa of Hilo; sisters, Patsy Umeno of Anaheim, Calif., and Janice (James) Manalili of Kona; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Born in Kaueleau, she was a retired Hawaiian studies teacher for Pahoa Elementary School, genealogist and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Keaukaha Ward and member of Alu Like Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna Program in Keaukaha. Visitation 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, May 31, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hilo Stake Center, 1373 Kilauea Ave. Funeral service at 11 a.m. Modest attire. Smoking, vaping, alcohol or caffeinated drinks on church grounds are prohibited. Cremation to follow.
