Big Island Inter-scholastic Federation (BIIF) water polo and golf competed in Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) playoff competition over the last couple of days.
Sailer leads BIIF golfers
Following Round 1 of the HHSAA girls golf state championships on Tuesday at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course on Oahu, Hawaii Prep’s Anna Sailer leads all BIIF golfers — shooting an 80 to be tied for 14th overall through the first 18 holes.
Hilo’s Lauren Kozohara was the next-best Big Isle finisher with a +14 (86), currently sitting tied for 33rd place. KS-Hawai‘i’s Adriana Volpe sits in 43rd with a 90 (+18). Vikings’ star Kierstin Ramos (+21) and Waiakea’s Ava Herr (+22) rounded out the top 50.
Ka Makani’s Helly Hughes and Waiakea’s Madelyn Awaya sit tied for 54th with a 96. Awaya’s teammate, Kiara Kimata, sits in 58th place with a 99.
KS-Hawai‘i’s Zaynie Lee Chow shot a +29, good enough for 59th. Kealakehe freshman Kaylee Palakiko-Belt leads all west-side BIIF golfers with a +32. Lastly, Hilo’s Mika Holi shot a 106 to claim 65th place.
The tournament will wrap up today at the same course, slated for a 7 a.m. first tee.
Water polo: ROOSEVELT 10, HPA 0
Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s girls water polo team’s season ended Monday afternoon against Roosevelt — falling in a narrow 10-8 loss in the opening round of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) playoffs at the Kona Community Aquatic Center. Ka Makani ended 2024 after falling to Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i in the BIIF Championships on April 27 and then to the Rough Riders.
Roosevelt had a balanced attack from its offense, logging six different scorers in the match. Kimberly Cassens finished with three goals, Jochel Oba two, Jazlyn Tomisa two and Jaeci Oba, Jonna Keo and Malia Lauret all had one apiece.
HPA star Maile Imonen finished with a game-high six goals, ending her season tied for first in state Division I in cumulative goals with 53. Imonen’s teammates — Ione Chicone and Rosey Wawner — scored one goal each.
The Rough Riders will next face No. 1-seeded Punahou in the quarterfinals at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama in Honolulu.
