Waiakea boys and girls tennis took home the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) team titles Saturday morning at the Warriors’ home court — officially capping off an island season of dominance.

In the boys competition, Waiakea beat Kealakehe 3-2. In the first singles competition, Iori Furuhata swept Hunter Felte by scores of 6-0 and 6-0 to get the Warriors on the board first.
Dayne Kunimoto and Kaiden Kunimoto beat Parker Felte and Keoni Roth in three sets for the Waiakea’s second team point – 1-6, 6-3 and 10-5. To officially clinch the win, the Warriors won the final doubles match in a sweep, as Daniel Nucci and Ezra Weiss beat Evan Lam and Toby Aspirin (6-0, 6-0).
Over in the girls field, Waiakea swept HPA 5-0. Lanie Takahashi beat Arabella Asuncion in the opening singles match (6-1, 6-4), Kiara Kunimoto beat Tata Seward in the second singles match (6-0, 6-0), Chloe Takahashi and Jada Igawa beat Savannah Hulugalle and Catherine Hulugalle in the opening doubles match (6-0, 6-0), Mari Iwata and Jessie Higa beat Danica Didonato and Leia Beniaff (6-4, 7-6) in the next doubles and Annika Nishida and Kaiya Ideta beat Tiffany Golden and Kela Quayle in the final event (6-0, 6-0).
Next up in prep tennis will be the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s (HHSAA) 2024 Island Insurance Tennis Championships on May 9-11 in Central Oahu Regional Park.
