The Kamuela Philharmonic will perform a MasterWorks concert, “Greatness from Start to Finish,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
Under the direction of artistic director and conductor Brian Dollinger, the Kamuela Philharmonic will showcase a musical journey featuring Franz Josef Haydn’s Symphony No. 1, Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8, and Jessie Montgomery’s 2024 Grammy Award-winning piece, “Rounds,” for piano and string orchestra.
“This concert promises an exceptional experience for classical music enthusiasts and beyond,” according to a press release. “Notably, the philharmonic welcomes esteemed conductor and pianist Rei Hotoda as a guest artist, performing alongside the Philharmonic during Montgomery’s revelatory ‘Rounds’ on piano. Hotoda is an active and critically acclaimed pianist and a force of nature, redefining the 21st-century concert experience with her boundless energy and visionary programming.”
“Rounds” is a fusion of inspiration from T.S. Eliot’s “Four Quartets,” migratory bird patterns and fractal repetition, offering an immersive musical experience.
The concert begins with Haydn’s groundbreaking First Symphony, performed by the philharmonic for the very first time.
“Haydn has been called the ‘Father of the Symphony,’ having written over one hundred symphonies. He was the standard bearer of the genre and the composers who came after him were not only inspired by his prowess but also learned and expanded upon the techniques he created,” Dollinger said in the press release. “Hearing his very first symphony in its animating spirit and sophisticated layout will bring a wonderful contrast to the Dvorák symphony that is on the program as well.”
Closing the program is Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8, renowned for its jubilant spirit and pastoral beauty, celebrating the landscapes of Bohemia and concluding the afternoon with a flourish of timeless melodies.
