Janet Leilani Simmons, 86, of Hilo died Jan. 11 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Aleamae, Kalaoa, she was a homemaker and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward. Services held. Survived by sons, Mervin Simmons of Kona, John (Cathy) Simmons of Hilo, Moses (Georgia) Simmons of Ocean View, Jeremiah (Barbara) Simmons of Texas, David Kaluna of Maine, Simon (Lisa) Simmons of Hilo and Carl Simmons of Honolulu; daughters, Joycelyn (Anthony) Binney of Captain Cook, Katherine (Nam) Nguyen of Mountain View and Evangeline Simmons of Honolulu; siblings, Joseph Nihau and Julia Subica of Hilo, Shirley (Sydney) Nihau of Glenwood, George (Susan) Nihau of Nevada, Maize (Chris) Lievens and Phillip Nihau of Hilo; 35 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. Fujiko Akamatsu

Fujiko Akamatsu, 104, of Kealakekua, died Jan. 8 in Kailua-Kona. She was a former cashier at Oshima Store, a retired kitchen worker at the Kona Community Hospital, and a member of the Daifukuji Soto Mission in Honalo, where visitation will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, with services at 11 a.m. Lunch will follow in the social hall. Survived by daughters Mildred (Stanley) Tromberg of Plantation, Fla., Linda (Samuel) Camp of Honolulu, Phyllis (Solomon) Alani of Kona; son-in-law Rex Bennett of Las Vegas, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
