Get ready for an outdoor adventure as the annual Hearts and Trails running event returns on Sunday, Feb. 25 to once again feature an all-women’s trail event over the lush landscapes of Big Island’s Makani Golf Club.
Presented by Aloha Tri Sports, a local 501c(3) organization, the event will offer two race distances geared for women of all ages and fitness levels — a 3-mile and a 5-mile trail runs — with proceeds benefitting the Puuwaawaa Dry Forest Reserve via charity partner, Ka Ahahui O Ka Nahelehele. A free Keiki Dash for boys and girls ages 9 and under is also available.
“2024 is going to be about shaping up with lots of fun and fitness for the New Year and we are excited to kick off our ‘Celebrating Women and Smiles for Miles’ intentions with Hearts and Trails Runs,” said Janet Higa-Miller, co-founder of Aloha Sport Kona and Aloha Tri Sports.
Set against the backdrop of stunning panoramic vistas of the Kohala coastline, the event promises to be nothing short of spectacular as one of the many standout features are the incredible views of Maunakea and Maui’s Haleakala. While the views themselves are certainly enough to inspire and motivate participation, the event also provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate the spirit and camaraderie of women in sports.
The 5-mile race caters to the more experienced trail runners, offering a chance to tackle the challenging single-track trails with its twisting and undulating pathways — a true temperature check of one’s physical prowess and mental fortitude making this event an irresistible challenge.
For those looking to dip their toes into trail running, the 3-mile race offers a more approachable experience. The shorter course still provides the same breathtaking views while offering newcomers to the sport an opportunity to discover the excitement and thrill of trail running.
Higa-Miller and her Aloha Tri Sport team have worked hard to put a strong emphasis on creating a supportive and empowering environment for women in sports and you will not be disappointed. The camaraderie and sense of community among participants are an expected highlight as runners share the trails and cheer each other on all the way to the finish line.
If you’ve never participated in an all-women’s scenic-off-road trail race, this is your chance! Start times will be at 7:30 a.m. for the 5-mile trail run and 7:45 a.m. for the 3-miler, both held at the Makani Golf Club on Feb. 25. There will be no race day registration.
