GIRLS: WAIAKEA 5 – KONAWAENA 0
Waiakea High’s girls soccer team started things off with a big win, routing Konawaena High 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Ken Yamase Memorial Stadium.
Kau‘ionalani Mahi-Murray led the Warriors’ offense, notching her first hat trick of the season.
Charlie Silva and Ailani Franklin each also scored goals for Waiakea, and goalkeeper Journey Morimoto was credited with her fifth shutout of the season.
So far, no BIIF teams have scored goals on Waiakea, while the Warriors have averaged 6.6 goals per game. Following the victory over Konawaena, the Warriors moved to 5-0.
Waiakea will end the calendar year with a road test, kicking off 3 p.m. today at Kealakehe High (0-3). The Warriors and Waveriders will next rematch to kick off 2024, meeting Jan. 5 at Waiakea.
Konawaena will return to Hilo to face Hilo High today at 2 p.m. at UH-Hilo’s soccer field. Both Wildcat teams will end 2023 with a road doubleheader Dec. 28 at Honoka‘a High.

The Warriors defended their home pitch in mercy rule fashion, crushing the visiting Wildcats 9-0 to follow the girls’ game Tuesday afternoon at WHS.
The victory over the Wildcats was Waiakea’s first win of the season, as the Warriors moved to 1-1-1. It was also their final pitch appearance of the calendar year. They will return on Jan. 5 to host Parker School (0-3-1).
Now 1-2, Konawaena will join its girls team for a Dec. 28 doubleheader at Honoka‘a.
